I perform my new solo program, “From Gottschalk to Gershwin, on the Lyric Chamber Music Society Concert series at the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York. This program traces the origins of Ragtime, early jazz and “World” music beginning with Gottschalk’s remarkable compositions in styles ranging from his native New Orleans Afro-Carribean musical dance forms, Cuban (considered ‘proto Ragtime”), Puerto Rican, Brazilian and Spanish music, all wrapped within the pianism of the European tradition. It then continues onto Scott Joplin, Fats Waller and George Gershwin… with a few of my own “Gottschalkian” arrangements included!
