In a unique and eclectic concept, the members of the trio (flutist François Richard, violinist Helmut Lipsky and pianist Matt Herskowitz) weave together a musical tapestry inspired by classical, post-impressionist jazz (Romance and Mystère) and World music (Latingo). In addition to imbuing jazz rhythms and improvisational flair into classical masterpieces, most notably in the genre-fusing arrangement of J.S. Bach’s Prelude from the Violin Partita in E Major, these seasoned musicians also perform their own compositions in an auspicious musical encounter founded on creativity, chemistry and virtuosity. The project, initiated by François Richard, developed a unique and compelling voice thanks to this exceptional meeting of three diverse artists from different backgrounds (USA, Germany and Canada). The idea of incorporating a string quartet with the trio was born from a concert they performed together at L’Astral Maison du Festival in Montreal, which was nominated for a Prix Opus for best Jazz and World music concert of the year. Continuing their collaboration on this album, you’ll hear five pieces performed with the string quartet and five performed by the trio themselves.
